Background of the Study
Clinical preceptorship is a teaching model where experienced practitioners (preceptors) mentor nursing students in clinical settings, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This mentorship is crucial for developing students' clinical skills, critical thinking, and professional behavior. In Jigawa State, Nigeria, understanding the impact of clinical preceptorship on nursing students' practical competence is essential for optimizing nursing education and improving healthcare delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of clinical preceptorship, there is limited empirical evidence on its effectiveness in enhancing nursing students' practical competence in Jigawa State. Identifying the benefits and challenges associated with preceptorship can inform strategies to strengthen nursing education programs in the region.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current implementation of clinical preceptorship programs in nursing schools within Jigawa State.
2. To evaluate the impact of clinical preceptorship on nursing students' practical competence.
3. To identify challenges faced by preceptors and students during the preceptorship process.
Research Questions
1. How are clinical preceptorship programs currently implemented in nursing schools in Jigawa State?
2. What is the impact of clinical preceptorship on the practical competence of nursing students?
3. What challenges do preceptors and nursing students encounter during the preceptorship process?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students who undergo clinical preceptorship exhibit higher levels of practical competence compared to those who do not.
2. Effective clinical preceptorship positively influences the development of critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills among nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students and their preceptors in selected nursing institutions in Jigawa State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and practical assessments. Limitations may include variability in preceptorship experiences across different institutions and potential biases in self-reported data.
